Oh yeah. I fancy myself a go-getter, just do it, highly productive kind of gal. The truth is, I can procrastinate with the best of you. It’s not a consistent avoidance of my life, but it’s been going on for too many days now. A slide towards distraction. Surely I NEED to finish re-watching Game of Thrones before the new season starts. Or dig through the pantry for that bag of chocolate. Perhaps stare at my task list again.
In the spirit of getting a MOVE ON, here are my favorite remedies for a bout of procrastination:
#1 Permission For Sloth
YES! You can set it all down, take a break with no guilt, apologies or shame. Just DON’T Do It. For now, for a set period of time. When we truly let go, we often find renewed spirit and energy.
What’s up with all of this procrastination? Get interested (not judgmental) about your resistance. Where do you notice it in your body? Picture your avoidance – pretend it can speak to you. What insight & wisdom is there for you?
#3 Just One Step
Break it down into bite-size pieces, nibbles really. Make it so easy to ‘do just one thing’ that it’s a no-brainer. And then one more. And again. Let momentum come easily.
#4 Be Kind
Be sweet to yourself. Really loving. Remind yourself of everything you HAVE done in the past week, month, year. How far you have come. What you admire about yourself and what you bring to the party. Let kudos carry you forward, not self criticism.
MY CHALLENGE TO YOU
If YOU are struggling with procrastination, pick one of the tips – give it a try. See if you are able to move and shake now. Or try something else that has worked for you in the past or you have been meaning to experiment with. Trust yourself!
